Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
As a ministerial research institution funded by the German Federation, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) is tasked with promoting occupational safety and health (OSH) and humane work design. BAuA’s diverse research and development activities allow it to monitor issues of long-term significance, thus enabling it to identify evolving trends in the world of work while closing gaps in what is currently known about BAuA’s different fields of action. It aims to detect opportunities and risks for employees at an early stage, develop approaches for appropriate, targeted OSH measures, and ensure safety and health concerns are factored in from the very beginning when technological and organizational innovations are introduced. As a result, BAuA’s research not only contributes to the further development of knowledge in specialized, work-related disciplines, but lays the scientific foundations for the action taken by policymakers, official agencies, and workplace OSH practitioners.
BAuA contributes its expertise to specialist policy deliberations, political debates, and societal discussions about relevant questions within its remit. It provides scientific policy advice, firstly by drawing up analyses and opinions, working on national and international bodies, and taking part in cooperative projects, and secondly by directly advising ministries and other interested groups. It supports the German Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) in the management and technical coordination of central initiatives and bodies.
