The research on and development of high-performance, trustworthy, and resource-efficient applications of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) constitutes the central mission of the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The international AI institute conducts research under the central paradigm of Triangular AI (AI³) whereby AI models are not only trained based on data, but also use additional knowledge and contextual information. While fundamental scientific research lies at the heart of the Lamarr Institute’s endeavors, Lamarr scientists from different disciplines also work together on multifaceted application scenarios of Machine Learning, for example in Astrophysics, Logistics and Natural Language Processing.

The Lamarr Institute is committed to advancing ethical standards, equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion in the field of AI and ML. In addition, companies benefit from the direct transfer of Lamarr research findings into application – from innovative ML technologies to the certification of AI systems, to co-working with Lamarr researchers in the context of industry cooperations. The Lamarr Institute’s educational offers span from programs for school children, students and young scientists to continuing trainings in companies.

The Lamarr Institute combines the leading AI expertise of its partner organizations TU Dortmund University, the Fraunhofer Institutes for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) in Sankt Augustin and Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dortmund as well as the University of Bonn. It receives permanent institutional funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the German government’s AI strategy.
